Ölbeat 098: Nøgne Ø #100

Brewery: Nøgne Ø
Country: Norway
Style: Barley Wine
Abv: 10 %

What about the beer?
Colour is thick dark nutty brown with a small tan head. Aroma has sweet caramel malts, berries and dark fruits. Taste lifts off with intensely sweet malty and fruity hoppy first bite. Combination of sweet caramel malts and fruity bitter hops takes over with notes of chocolate and berries. Presence of alcohol is noticeable in a great way. Near the finish sweet bitterness and piny flavours come through. Aftertaste has dryness, bitterness, fruits and alcohol.

Magnificent, complex and delicious Barley Wine. Beautiful marriage of sweet malts and fruity bitter hops, with strong abv and nice side flavours applauding in the background. This surely goes to the top of my beer list and again grows expectations for the next Nøgne Ø brew to be tasted.

Ölbeat

This brew calls for something magical. I guess it's personal, too. Hearing this song live a little over a year ago was unforgettable. There's something in Robert Plant's voice that gives me the chills - especially after Zeppelin years:

What about the beer?
Colour is blackish dark brown with a thin beige head. Aroma has a bit smoky roasted malts, espresso and dark chocolate. Taste begins with heavily charred-roasted malts with a hint of alcohol. Roasted malts and strong espresso come in front. Near the finish bitter hops, salty cocoa and some dark fruit flavours step to the side. Aftertaste has dry bitterness, dark chocolate and black coffee.

Very tasty and special Imperial Stout. Roasted malts, coffee and chocolate all come in bitter-dry and strong extremes. Alcohol tries to exist in the taste, but quickly dies out. Flavours are not in any way rounded or flattened but that just suits me. Damn, it's great to have excellent breweries in your home town.

Ölbeat

Heavy punch-in-the-face brew cries for a similar song. Nothing similar with the noblity of the beer's name (vuorineuvos is a Finnish honorary title given for merits in industry) here's some Finnish heavy. The band connected itself to Finnish bulk lager brand later but who cares:

What about the beer?
Colour is hazy yellow with a large white head. Aroma has wheat malts, sweet spices and ripe banana. Taste starts with sharp sweet fruity and hoppy bite. Sweet wheat malts and spicy fruits - citrus and banana - take over. Towards the end fruits step in front and sweet bitter hops get through. Aftertaste is sweet fruity and slightly bitter.

Wheat beer with a ton of fruits and spices and a sharp twist of hops. Delicious and refreshing brew - funky taste of summer. No wonder this one is considered among the best of its style and among the German beers.

Ölbeat

Spices, fruits, hoppy twist and the fresh feeling of summer. Since the beer style is new in this blog, I found a new music style to match it. This skiffle tune is a timeless chilling song for lazy summer days:

Ölmönger Special: Visited Fat Lizard, 23 August 2016

Editor's note:
The visit took place over a month ago. The text is mainly boring and occasionally illogical. The pictures are rare and they're bad. Shit happens.

At Pub Winston Beer Festival on Day 2, I went to grab an Arctic Fuel from Fat Lizard & Radbrew booth. While waiting for my half-pint glass to fill up I asked Hessu if their brewery in Kivenlahti, Espoo, can be visited.
"Of course. Wednesday is the usual brewday, but contact us first."
Couple of days later a peek at the calendar: working trip to Helsinki on Tue-Wed, sleeping place on the sofa reserved at friend's crib, e-mail to the brewery - and exceptionally Tuesday 23 August was told to be the brewday of that week. Awesome!

Fat Lizard Brewing Company on Google Maps in September 2016
So we - I and the other idiot - made our way to Kivenlahti small industry area on the brewday at around 6 p.m. The brewery, which has exciting neighbours like a vehicle inspection station, was easy to find: white Chevy Van with Fat Lizard stickers on the sides, the only open garage door in the area and Hessu's beard revealed the hideout. We were welcomed by happy but seemingly tired couple of brewery founders Heikki "Hessu" Ylinen and Tuomas "Topo" Koskipää, who had brewed saison from 7 a.m. and were still working. "Would you like to have a beer?" was the first and unarguably the best question of the visit. Yes, thanks, we would.

Hessu and Topo's story with Fat Lizard has its roots in 1993, when the friends had their first West Coast beers while visiting California. It was mutual love from first sip without any love triangle jealousy shit. Surrogate experiments with American beers in Finland led to the observation that imported U.S. beers are far from fresh. Or "straight awful", as Topo puts it. The only way to get true and fresh American style ale was to brew yourself. So they learned and brewed. By the 2010's their know-how and skills of homebrewing reached the point-of-no-return: let's start a brewery! So, Fat Lizard Brewing Company Ltd was founded in 2013, the brewery facility was found and renovated in 2014 and the first commercial batch of 101 California Pale Ale came available in the beginning of 2015.

Which beer is this? Can't remember.
First beer at the brewery then: Lizard On A Stick, American Pale Ale with 6,8 % abv, collab brewed with Radbrew. Fresh, fruity, hoppy, tasty. Puts a smile in your mind.

The reason we were welcomed on Tuesday came clear in the start. The guys were off to a trip to the States on Wednesday. Working trip? Holiday trip? What kind of a trip?
"Just a trip. Visiting local breweries. Giving the likes of Russian River brewers Fat Lizard sample bottles with shaking hands. You know."
Umm, no, I don't. Haven't been giving samples of my own - or any, since my own are none - brews to representatives of a world top brewery lately, you know. Couldn't help mentioning about a row of Pliny the Elder bottles on a shelf.
"Yeah, we get them quite fresh from a friend who lives and works near the brewery and visits Finland now and then."
So the answer to the question whether they have any idols in the brewing business isn't a surprise.
"It would probably be Russian River."

Operating now in a former garage with annual production capacity of 25.000 liters has become a bit of a problem. The biggest problem isn't that you can't get any Lizard beer in Pori but close: the demand of their brews is higher than the guys can brew and they would like to brew more. So they've already found a new brewing facility in Otaniemi, Espoo, where the annual capacity could be 500.000 liters, that is 20 times more than now. The brewery is moving "soon".
"And there will be a restaurant."
A beer restaurant?
"A restaurant."
A food restaurant?
"A restaurant. A place where you can have something to eat and something to drink is a restaurant. Food restaurant? Can you have more tautology than that?"
Ok. So you will run a restaurant by the brewery...
"No, we won't. We will run the brewery, and someone else will run the restaurant. And it will be a great restaurant. Best in the world."
Cheers to that, probably will make a visit. But I'll wait more for a chance to get Lizard beer in Pori. Hope that will happen, too.

Being a professional brewer has its advantages... (here's Hessu)
Second beer at the brewery: Track Day, Session IPA with 4,9 % abv. Fresh, citrus, fruits, tasty. Puts a smile on your eyes.

But let's get back to the demand. One myth in the growing craft beer scene in Finland is that a brewery should have a long list of different and new brews on their beer list, since the pubs and the bars always want to have something different and new on tap. In the case of Fat Lizard the myth doesn't hold: the vast majority of their brews are American-style pale ales with few exceptions. The bars want to have the same beers on tap again. The secret?
"We've automated the process so, that besides the ingredients also the temperatures and the times for each phase in the process gets done exactly the same way as it's done every time. So the brew looks, smells and tastes exactly the same with each batch. And we can see with a glance at the computer screen if something is going wrong. And the people at the bar know what they're getting."
Wait a minute. This must be the way that every brewery in the 21st century brews. At least it should be.
"Unfortunately it's not. Not in this scale. Computer-automated brewing could be a business idea of its own, if someday we got bored with brewing. But for now, we're brewing."
Ok. Learning new things about professional brewing all the way, I guess. What about deciding to quit making APAs & IPAs and switching to something more trendy like sours?
"When we announce quitting APAs and IPAs, Fat Lizard has gone out of business."
Great to know that in the constantly changing world some good things will stay.

...like tasting your products on breaks (here's Topo).
Between the chit-chatting Topo shows us a stack of American homebrewing bibles that have helped and are helping them in brewing. Hessu walks us through the fine details of brewing process, and puts emphasis on two things: quality control (automation mentioned before) and hygiene in brewing (= avoiding unwanted starch and proteins as well as conditions favourable for bacteria). We even get the answer why Fat Lizard beers are vegan but every beer isn't.
"Some unfiltered beers are cleared from yeast with finings. Most common fining is isinglass, which is made from the swim bladders of fish. We don't use finings, so our beers are vegan."
We look and listen in wonder, since we know we are forgetting this lesson soon, at least before our first homebrew. Which will possibly never be, since neither of us has the courage to suggest the idea to one's spouse.
"What's there to suggest? You just decide to brew and that's it."
Yes, Topo. We're still waiting for the stone to spin on the surface.

Third and final beer at the brewery: Arctic Fuel, India Pale Ale with 7,3 % abv. Fresh, fruity, malty, hoppy, piny, tasty. Puts a wide smile on your face.

The white van, the open garage door and Hessu's beard still marking the X.
Around 8 p.m. it's time to thank our hosts and leave the building. The professionals have some work to do, still. We've caused enough trouble with our visit, even though the guys seem to have been unstoppably on the right track all the time, knowing just what to do next and working together. All the best to Hessu, Topo and Fat Lizard.

Ölbeat

I heard Topo mentioning the fatal words "Eppu Normaali" during our visit. Well, you can only wish Abby Normal's Finnish cousin to show up here. This song's - and probably also the video's - content clearly imitates the guys' visits in the Golden State.

What about the beer?
Colour is pitch black with almost invisible beige crown. Aroma has roasted malts, salty liquorice and espresso. Taste begins with heavily charred malts and smooth bitter hops. Sugarless black espresso and smoky-roasted malts take over with a hint of sour liquorice in the back. Near the finish dry strong hops and bitter dark chocolate come out. Aftertaste has long-lasting roasted dryness and bitterness.

Strong, heavy and aggressive stuff: roast, coffee, chocolate and hops are all taken to the bitter-dry extreme. No compromises done with the flavours. Beautiful Imperial Stout. Loved it.

What about the beer?
Colour is dark reddish brown with small natural white head. Aroma has caramel malts, syrup and sweet spices. Taste lifts off with sweet syrupy malts. Sweet malts continue in the lead with a caramel hoppy bite  and some sweet spices added. Towards the end we get some sugary alcohol and berry flavour. Aftertaste has malty sweet and gentle bitterness.

Magnificent traditional ale. The union of  caramel malts, gentle hops and sweet spiciness really makes this spectacular. While and after enjoying you have a really warm and comfortable feeling.

Ölbeat

Although tempted to attach this traditional ale to a traditional Scottish song like "Ye Jacobites by Name", I finally chose a modern rock ballad by a Scottish band. The song just echoes the same kind of simple beauty I tasted in the brew:

What about the beer?
Colour is hazy golden orange with a medium-sized white head. Aroma has mango, orange and some floral perfume. Taste begins with a spicy, modestly bitter bite. Gently bitter grapefruit-orange liquid fills the mouth with a sweet spicy and fruity side note. Towards the end the orange and even candy sweetness joins the fun, just to be knocked down by moderate dry pine. Aftertaste has sweet orange, bitterness and some dryness.

Tasty fruity multi-citrus-flavoured Double IPA. There's fruit, bitter, sweet, spice and dry. I expect this from this beer style. Zee Germans have brewed a heck of a beer again.

What about the beer?
Colour is hazy golden yellow with a nice white foamy head. Aromas has orange, mango and lemon. Taste starts with gentle fruity bitterness. Fresh, slightly bitter and mildly sweet grapefruit takes control with some piny dryness and malty flavour in the background. Near the finish some orange and a bite of alcohol gets through. Aftertaste has long-lasting bitter grapefruit and dry pine.

Balanced and delicate India Pale Ale from Norway. It's doesn't offer overthrown hop feast but smooth bitterness that gives room to the citrus flavours and even some spotlight to the malts. There's the delicious and enjoyable tingle in this one that should be in every IPA.

Ölbeat

No questions asked - this was instantly my choice. The fruity flavour just asked for some R&B and we've already listened to Mr. D'Arby once before with an IPA. So let's timetravel back to the 80's again:

What about the beer?
Colour is dark brownish copper orange with a huge natural white head. Aroma has sweet citrus fruits and floral scents. Taste starts with tender sweet bitter bite. Sweet hoppy bitterness and a tasty mix of grapefruit and orange dominate. Near the finish the sweet fruits and malts get in front, and some piny dryness is added. Aftertaste has piny dryness, sweet bitterness and alcohol warmth.

This is not so hoppy bitter and grapefruit dominated Double IPA as they usually are. Smooth sweet and fruity flavours play ball. Tasty experience and excellent journey to the fruity side of hop-powered ales.

Ölbeat

Instead of aggressively powerful rock genre, I took a dive to mellow rock. Without forgetting that the brew tastes powerful and alive. Since IPA's have been labeled as beers of warm seasons, the theme of the song is pretty close to ideal:

Colour is thick dark brown with big tan head. Aroma has sweet malts and fresh dark fruits. Taste begins with smooth syrupy caramel malts and a slightly hoppy bite. The combination of caramel malts and sweet bitterness comes on strong. Near the finish we get raisins, plums and some bittersweet alcohol. Aftertaste has bitter malty sweetness.

So I stepped into the world of dobbelbocks and don't want to get out. The combination of malty sweetness, silky bitterness and dark fruits makes a delicious German brew. Excellent flavour and great experience.

Since the brew is commercially described "great as a party drink with friends and family", the song mostly follows the idea. Instead of picking any grandiloquent orchestral piece, I went to a completely different direction. So, music for weekend and good times it is:

Colour is hazy yellow with large white head. Aroma has ripe bananas, wheat malts and fruits. Taste begins with gentle sweet bite with carbonation. Sweet fruit and wheat malt flavours take over with some lemon-like sourness and yeast getting in the picture later. In the back of the mouth we get some sweet bitter-sour flavours. Aftertaste has sweet malts and dried fruits.

This is one standard for a good wheat beer. The malty backbone carries the sweet and sour fruity flavours well. Fabulous brew that reminds me of tasting more from the traditional German beer styles.

Ölbeat

Looking for some soul to match the bitter-sourness and some rock to match the fruity character, I stopped by this 90's soul rock classic. Don't know if it's a complete match, but it surely is one hell of a tune.

Colour is black with small vanishing beige head. Aroma has sweet roasted malts, delicious coffee and a soft scent of alcohol. Taste brings very sweet coffee with gentle hoppy bite and gentle roast on stage first. Sweetness dominates heavily but doesn't cover delicious and intense flavours of black coffee, dark chocolate, sugar-roasted malts and even raisins and sweet cherries. Towards the end cocoa liquor blankets the other flavours. Aftertaste has sweet alcohol warmth and bitterness with roasted coffee.

Excellent dessert Imperial Stout for sweet-toothed people - I seem to be one. The sweetness doesn't hide the rich and complex flavours of coffee, malts, cocoa and berries. I'm usually not a big fan of sugar coated brews but this one tricked me. The guys at Pôhjala brewery really master the dark side of beer.

Colour is cloudy golden yellow with a big white head. Aroma has fresh grass, malts, hops and a slice of citrus - and when warmed up: strong scent of mango and orange. Taste sets going with fresh citrus and sharp bitter bite. Lemon and grapefruit flavours take over. Towards the end semisweet orange and mango come stronger to the picture with smooth piny notes. Aftertaste has gentle dry bitterness with lemon and peel.

Fresh and fruity from the first bite to the finish. Mango doesn't run over the other flavours, quite the opposite: the sweet fruits are well hidden under the fresh bitter citrus. Classy and fine Double IPA without overbursting bitterness.

Ölbeat

Fresh and fruity suits this funk rock song, even though it was a revisit to the band's roots in the 80's. There's a similar catch in Anthony Kiedis' sharp-pointed rap-singing and the funky-jazzy rhythm that we have in the brew:

Gently bitter-sour grapefruit takes over with a dry piny note. Malty character and sweetish lime with a touch of peel comes through near the finish. Aftertaste has fresh bitter grapefruit and some malty dryness.

Very drinkable, not overly hopped India Pale Ale. In the flavour there's a nice palette of citrus, which is supported by smooth dryness and tasty malts. Not for the wildest hopheads, but for ones who like a softer and fruitier approach to the style.

Ölbeat

As the word wild doesn't in this case imply to crazy-hopped brew but rather nicely fruity IPA, we don't go searching for a hard or punk rock song. Exceptionally, we go relatively near to the brew's birthplace with this entertaining piece of new wave dance rock from a Birmingham-based band:

Sour citrus and fruity yeast take quickly the command. Near the finish some sweet pineapple and kiwi make a visit. Aftertaste is sour, yeasty and bitterly dry.

This works. Sour and fresh brew. There's the taste of summer here. There's more Belgian ale like yeast and farmhouse ale like lemon here than IPA bitterness, so this goes to the sour ale category with me. Anyway, excellent delicious beer from the Jyväskylä dudes again.

What about the beer?
Colour is pale hazy yellow with a small white head. Aroma has stingy sourness and tartness, mostly grapefruit and some lingonberry. Taste begins with extremely tart and sour lemon with gentle hoppy bitter bite. The citrus dominates firmly with tiny malty and bitter notes here and there. Near the finish acidic berries like lingonberry and cloudberry join the orchestra. Aftertaste has lemon sourness and salty dryness.

Heavy hardcore sour-tart brew. The tartness strikes aggressively to the gums, lemon sourness dominates the symphony and gooseberry shows clearly up in the final notes. Unforgettably powerful and great experience. I was taken to the edge like the name of the beer, given by a popular horizontal cliff in the mountains of Norway, promises.

Trolltunga. Edgy place, edgy beer. To get some music to match I had to visit the other side of the world. Exciting brew asks for dangerous company. Here's a funky rock song about one kind of danger:

From the 1990 album X, the song was written by Andrew Farriss and Michael Hutchence.

What about the beer?
Colour is dark thick brown with a dense medium vanilla head. Aroma has sweet syrup, honey and sour yeast. Taste starts with sweet yeasty bitterness and smooth natural carbonation. The journey continues with honeyed malts, rich syrup, plum jam and sweet-sour fruity flavours. Near the finish the artwork is completed by spicy bitterness and dry-wine-like sourness. Aftertaste lasts long with sweet bitterness and alcohol warmth.

It's not hard to understand how this brew is seen as one of the best beers in the world. The rich sweet fruity and yeasty taste makes you crave for another sip but your sips get smaller and smaller as you don't want them to end. I'll have to make a reservation for another meeting with this abbey treasure.

Legendary brew can be matched with nothing else than a legendary song. No contest - complaints are groundless:

Colour is black with a finger-thick beige-brown head. Aroma has espresso, dark chocolate and rum. Taste begins with rich dark-roasted coffee with a little sugar and a biting hoppy twist. Roasted malts and bitter dark chocolate hop in and get mixed with the coffee. Towards the end sweet bitter hops and nice slice of rum join the orchestra of flavours. Aftertaste has sweet roasty bitterness and warming alcohol.

Congratulations to me - found the bottled perfection: superb mix of fine black coffee, delicious dark chocolate, bittersweet hops and an alcoholic bite. The powerful flavours don't seem to soften, flatten or end at all. Great brew seems to be guaranteed, when it says Founders on the label.

Dark-coloured top performance requires another dark-themed top performance. It's probable that this brew will be topped later, but until then there's no doubt about the choice:

Metallica: Master of Puppets (YouTube, Live 2012)

From the 1986 album Master of Puppets, the song was written by James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Cliff Burton.

Colour is clear golden orange with a finger-thick natural white head. Aroma has fresh lemon, grass and a sweet slice of orange. Taste gets a fresh hoppy start that grows quickly to sharp tongue-biting bitterness. Fresh and bitter-sour grapefruit steals the show with a lemon twist. Towards the end hops bite back with piny dryness. Aftertaste has dry pine and bitter grapefruit.

Really pure and fresh tasting India Pale Ale. Heavy ride of citrus flavour dry-hops from start to end. Cutting the crap short: this is what a well-done West Coast IPA should taste like. Period.

There are many rock classics that have the label "Made for California". My ear just happened to pick this one. Better now than later:

The Eagles: Hotel California (YouTube)

From the 1976 album Hotel California, the song was written by Don Felder, Don Henley and Glenn Frey.
